“The James Madison Institute Appoints New Vice President of Policy”
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The James Madison Institute (JMI) announced today that Sal Nuzzo has joined JMI as the vice president of policy and director of JMI’s Center for Economic Prosperity to further develop and strengthen the Institute’s growing research and education efforts. Nuzzo has spent his career engaged in the public arena – as a consultant, business executive, and nonprofit administrator. He brings with him a deep understanding of the multiple facets of Florida’s economy and a forward-focused outlook on the needs of the State.
“Sal is a key addition to The James Madison Institute team. His wealth of experience and knowledge significantly increases JMI’s ability to guide policy decisions made at the state and national level,” Dr. Bob McClure, JMI president and CEO said. “He is a trusted expert, a family man and a Floridian who is personally committed to JMI’s mission of advancing economic opportunity for all Floridians.”
For more than a decade, Nuzzo served in policy consulting roles with MGT of America and Evergreen Solutions, working on issues such as education delivery systems, public employee pensions, and public safety collective bargaining. After time spent with both public consulting firms, Sal became Chief of Staff with The Florida State University’s Alumni Association, directing the operations and administration for FSU’s 300,000-plus strong alumni enterprise.
Following his tenure at FSU, he then joined the Florida Chamber of Commerce, where he directed the Chamber Foundation’s efforts as the Research and Public Policy Manager. In that role he oversaw the Chamber’s Florida Scorecard project, all of the Chamber’s policy research initiatives, and contract relationships with organizations such as VISIT FLORIDA, CareerSource Florida, and Enterprise Florida.
“Leading JMI’s policy department is truly a dream job for me. I count myself fortunate to be joining such a respected think tank that prides itself on their commitment to free market principles,” Nuzzo said. “As Florida’s population increases, our state will face many challenges, but also have the ability to take advantage of many opportunities. For nearly 30 years, JMI has played a critical role as the thought leader in this period of substantial growth in Florida. I look forward to working with the JMI team to further develop their already extensive research and education efforts as Florida enters into a new era.”
Sal earned his B.S. in economics with a concentration in Public Policy from Florida State University while serving as an assistant legislative analyst with the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA). A native of Connecticut, Sal graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn. before heading south for a warmer climate and healthier economy.
“Over the past two years, JMI has grown considerably as we’ve added multiple new team members, new policy centers, and established our new Tallahassee headquarters at The Columns, a Florida landmark built in 1830. We are grateful for the support of so many that have invested in our mission. This is a clear sign that Floridians, and our many other supporters across the nation, have become increasingly aware that the public policy recommendations JMI promotes guide Florida on a path to economic prosperity.”
