In January 2018, Dr. Bob McClure, President and CEO of The James Madison Institute, was invited to Washington D.C.to be a voice for free-market federal policies.

He appeared before the Food and Drug Administration to speak about innovative technologies developed by Phillip Morris to reduce tobacco addiction and use.

He also shared “The Florida Story” with Americans for Tax Reform, a national organization which stands for “simpler, flatter, lower, and more visible taxes.”

In his testimony to the FDA, Dr. McClure said:

Time and again, the principles of the free market have proven to be the best solution for advancing human prosperity. Over the past 25 years, more than two billion people have been lifted out of poverty because of the expansion of free market systems. Unlike massive government bureaucracies, free markets encourage innovation to solve problems.

For a market that has stood still for generations, the traditional tobacco market is on the verge of finally experiencing the type of innovation that has improved the lives of millions elsewhere and through other industries. Internationally, a public health crisis is being mitigated not by government mandates, but by companies innovating to provide safer, alternative technologies.

Florida’s premier free-market think tank, The James Madison Institute is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nonpartisan research and educational organization. The Institute conducts research on such issues as health care, taxes, and regulatory environments.
