The James Madison Institute’s
Vice President of Public Policy
            The Vice President of Public Policy for The James Madison Institute shall:

Establish JMI’s policy priorities on an annual basis in coordination with other policy staffers and JMI’s President/CEO and with consideration given to short-term and long-term forecasts.

Oversee plan of action on each policy priority to ensure maximum impact.

Provide expertise and possible testimony for elected officials, staff, and media.

Oversee major policy-related publications (Journals, Backgrounders, Policy Briefs, op-ed columns, blogs) from inception of the idea and identification of authors through all of the processes involved in their editing and publication.

Write and draft op-ed columns and edit columns drafted by others.

Serve as senior editor, as needed, for the Institute’s entire written output, including not only policy-related publications such as Backgrounders and The Journal but also non-policy items such as The Messenger, the President’s Memo, press releases, grant proposals, fund-raising letters, Board of Directors agendas and – when requested, — the script for staff members’ speeches, inspecting this output for accuracy of information, appropriateness of tone, and correctness of grammar, usage, and spelling.

Work with policy staff colleagues to coordinate the policy calendar concerning the release dates for publications and concerning the Institute’s participation in policy-related events ranging from national and state conferences and speaking opportunities for JMI staff members to JMI-sponsored events.

Lead weekly policy meetings and provide up-to-the-minute information about recent events and trends concerning JMI’s policy priorities.

Consult with the policy staff and the Vice President for Communications concerning media outreach, including magazines, newspaper editorial boards, TV, radio, and the social media.

Consult with the staff of the Vice President for Advancement to assist with funding opportunities and grant proposals, especially those that advance JMI’s policy agenda, as well as attend meetings of JMI’s regional Boards of Advisors as appropriate and play an integral role in JMI’s future annual donor policy retreats.

Coordinate with JMI’s Research Advisory Council, calling on them as needed and keeping them involved.

Perform other policy-related tasks as needed.
