STATEMENT RELEASE: JMI APPLAUDS THE FLORIDA HOUSE FOR FIGHTING FOR K-12 STUDENTS

The James Madison Institute (JMI) hails the passage of House Bill 7055, a major education reform bill, by the Florida House of Representatives. This measure, which includes several key provisions supported by JMI in public testimony, now goes to the Florida Senate, where JMI hopes for swift passage without major revisions.

“As long-time supporters of student-centered education reform, we are very pleased to see the House adopt this proposal,” said William Mattox, director of JMI’s J. Stanley Marshall Center for Educational Options. “We are especially grateful that this legislation provides a new Hope Scholarship to victims of bullying and that it offers new parent-selected supplemental learning options for young students seeking to achieve proficiency in reading.”

JMI president and CEO, Bob McClure, PhD, praised House Speaker Richard Corcoran for championing the Hope Scholarship proposal and making it the House’s top priority this legislative session.

“This important legislation would not have been possible without the leadership of Speaker Corcoran and the work of House Education Committee Chairman Michael Bileca and Hope Scholarship sponsor Byron Donalds,” said McClure. “We hope the Senate will be equally courageous in fighting for the new Hope Scholarship.”
