The Florida House has sent a clear message to Florida parents and students that they will fund students and not systems.
The passage of HB 1 by the Florida House of Representatives is truly a cause for celebration. This legislation opens up scholarship opportunities for thousands of Florida students, including many special-needs children currently on waiting lists. Moreover, this legislation gives parents far more flexibility in how they use scholarship dollars (by converting all voucher programs to Education Savings Accounts). Students will benefit from the customized learning this flexibility makes possible; and taxpayers will benefit from the improved bang-for-buck that ESAs produce. Speaker Renner and Representative Tuck deserve much credit for shepherding this historic legislation through the process. Now, it’s the Senate’s turn to expand learning options for Florida students.
