2024

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and internet connectivity have revolutionized how education is delivered. While these technologies promise to boost educational attainment and create one of the planet’s most dynamic, entrepreneurial, and innovative economies, roadblocks lie ahead.

How lawmakers address these challenges could determine whether the United States is ultimately able to create the most robust education system in the world, leading to the most dynamic economy, or an educational system that fails students and an economy that falls behind global competitors like China.

Join The James Madison Institute and other thought leaders in Coral Gables on June 18 and 19 for our 2024 Florida Tech & Innovation Summit to learn about how policymakers can foster an educational environment that spurs innovation and entrepreneurialism to keep America a global economic leader.

Agenda At-A-Glance

Bringing Education Into The 21st Century
With the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence and immerse technology, its impact will forever change how K-12 students learn and receive an education. While these technologies promise to enhance educational attainment and outcomes for millions, they inevitably include drawbacks and face roadblocks to implementation. This panel will outline the potential use of these technologies and what lawmakers can do to ensure they are deployed safely and to their full potential.

Connecting the Unconnected
Over the past decade, internet speeds have grown at record pace, and more Americans are connected than ever before. Despite this positive trend, millions- including scores of rural Americans- still lack a reliable broadband connection, which prevents them from accessing a good education and the latest advancements in educational technology. This panel will explore what lawmakers at the state and federal level can do to close the digital divide and ensure that every student has access to a reliable broadband connection needed to receive an education in the Twenty-First Century.

Embedding Surveillance in Education
Join the Libertas Institute and Pacific Legal Foundation for an engaging discussion on the importance of privacy in the landscape of education amidst cutting-edge technology and remote learning trends. This panel will look at the innovative approaches schools are taking to ensure students have a safe and effective learning environment and the new constitutional privacy concerns that they entail

The Dos and Don’ts of Cybersecurity and Digital Literacy
Every day, cybercriminals will target government entities, private citizens, and businesses in an attempt to steal sensitive data or extract ransoms. The emotional, financial, and reputational damage can be crippling. Yet, state governments have been reluctant to invest in cybersecurity programs or have proposed legislation that would weaken cyber defenses, leaving citizens, businesses, and individuals vulnerable to criminal networks.  In this panel, we will explore why state governments, including fiscally conservative red states, should prioritize investment in cybersecurity education programs, cyber defenses, and workforce development. The cost of failing to invest could, after all, be far higher.

Taking Policymakers Back To School
2023 was a tumultuous year for U.S. technology policy, which saw a number of poorly designed tech bills from Congress and growing regulatory activism from federal agencies. Such developments continue to pose a substantial challenge to the future of U.S. innovation, especially as the country braces for the 2024 presidential election. Artificial intelligence regulation, data privacy, and antitrust are shaping to be three major tech policy issues that policymakers and observers should watch out for in the coming months. This panel seeks to raise awareness of these issues and major regulatory trends in the United States and discuss the way forward for a market-friendly, pro-innovation digital economy.
